PA Recovery Program
Physician Assistant Professional Recovery Program

The South Carolina Medical Society (SCMS) has a Physician Advocacy and Assistance Committee (PAAC) that partners with the South Carolina Recovery Professional Program to offer resources for medical professionals who struggle with issues related to substance abuse/dependence, or from a dual diagnosis of addiction and mental illness.

The Recovery Professional Program (RPP) works towards early identification of impaired healthcare professionals who are in need of assistance and helps them return to safe practice through appropriate effective monitoring, rehabilitation and recovery.
As licensees of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, Physician Assistants are eligible for assistance in addiction therapy through this program.  This is a confidential process and is not reported to the Board of Medical Examiners.

SCAPA partners with the SCMS and RPP to support their endeavors to ensure that Physician Assistants struggling with addiction, substance abuse or mental illness are able to get the help that they need by appointing a representative to serve on the PAAC. Joe Wehner PA-C ( represents SCAPA at their quarterly meetings and can be available to any of our members who are struggling with any of the above mentioned problems.
