Members of SCAPA’s Leadership Team met on a Saturday in April to review the past year’s progress and set the stage for SCAPA’s continued growth and outreach. Committees were asked to develop three goals for the year: one that embraces social media, one that focuses on membership involvement, and one elective goal. Following are some of the plans that were hatched.


The ASPIRE Committee, chaired by Skylar Stewart-Clark, plans to make monthly social media posts of things like pictures, testimonials, and thank you’s to PAs who regularly allow ASPIRE students to shadow them. The committee is working to encourage more PAs to host shadowing students and to update the correspondence information that is sent to our ASPIRE members. The committee has already developed a chart with information needed by a prospective PA student on all the new PA programs in South Carolina. The Awards Committee recommended changing the committee chair from the past PA of the Year to the current President. This policy change was made at the board meeting the next day, so the committee is chaired this year by Mason Hicks with SCAPA Area Reps (Shantae Siefert, Karen Karpick, Eric Shoup, Warren Pyles, and Amanda Brodie) serving as the committee members. The committee plans to use social media platforms to recognize past PA of the Year recipients and solicit nominees for 2016 PA of the Year Award. The committee also plans to create criteria for a Physician-PA team award and a community service award for 2017 and beyond.


The Communications Committee, chaired by Chad Robinson, plans to create position specific email addresses for the SCAPA leadership team to achieve uniformity and to allow ease in contacting a specific leader no matter who holds the position. The committee wants to establish and maintain a positive social media presence for SCAPA on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn and is very interested in adding additional SCAPA members to the committee who are social media proficient. The committee also plans to observe and report trends identified on social media analytics for SCAPA improvements in advertising, information dissemination and improving member benefits.


The CME Planning Committee, chaired by Temisha Budden and Megan Walters, plans to post and advertise CME opportunities more frequently on social media, to finalize and market the SCAPA Online CME Library, and to continually improve on an already excellent CME conference by offering more self-assessment and performance improvement CME options and eventually incorporating the new PA Programs with a student track and quiz bowl.   


The Diversity Committee, chaired by Caroline Snow Coates, plans to use social media as a platform for promoting Diversity Month in April 2017. The committee continues to redefine “diversity” through support of the philanthropy Scaledown project and attendance at the SC Rural Health Conference. Caroline plans to hold quarterly meetings and is very interested in engaging new and current committee members even more.


The Legislative Committee, chaired by Kevin Harmon, is interested in creating "spheres of Influence" within South Carolina that benefit SCAPA’s vision and incorporate the new PA programs. Kevin plans to meet with SCAPA lobbyist, Ted Riley, in the Fall to evaluate SCAPA and the profession’s present position and to strategize on future efforts for the board to consider with the ultimate goal of developing a 5-year strategic legislative plan. Once the direction is clear, the committee plans to develop a standardized PA-friendly message to be shared through social media so that SCAPA and the PAs of South Carolina stay on message across all efforts.


The Membership Committee, chaired by Liz Scarborough, plans to use social media to promote dues renewals, to work with the new PA programs on promoting student membership, and to review all membership benefits and recommend changes as needed.


The Philanthropy Committee, chaired by Torianne Davies, is working to develop a PI CME project for the SCaledown pediatric obesity toolkit and will post that information on Facebook when it becomes available. The committee plans to continue promoting the SCaledown project to primary care and pediatric practices by providing information on the pediatric obesity tool kit, training opportunities and necessary resources to implement the toolkit in their own practices. The committee will also continue to solidify SCAPA’s partnership with Scaledown by staying involved in the development and dissemination of as adult obesity toolkit as piloted with Dr. Key.


The number one goal for the Public Education Committee is identifying a new committee chair. After that, goals for the committee include working with the Legislative Committee to develop a Q&A page for the SCAPA website that PAs can consult when faced with questions about hot button PA affairs, to develop a common message, and to utilize social media heavily during PA week to promote the PA profession and the “common message”


The Reimbursement Committee, chaired by Kelly Headley, continues to participate in the bi-monthly AAPA STAR conference calls and plan to use social media and area meetings to disseminate the information gained during these calls. The committee also plans to work on an FAQ section for the SCAPA website.
